Susan Cooper’s novel Silver on the Tree contains the following speech: ‘All life is theatre . . , We are all actors, you and I, in a play which nobody wrote and nobody will see. We have no audience but ourselves. Some players would say that is the best kind of theatre’ (p. 149). That is, each player acts as a private individual.
Tajfel recognizes that ‘much (if not most) of our social behaviour in many circumstances’ (p. 242) is behaviour which is interpersonal, interacted between private individuals. ‘Quite often’, however, the actors ‘behave primarily as members of well defined and clearly distinct social categories’ (p. 228). The interaction is not interaction between individuals: it is interaction based on group identification. If there is conflict it will be ‘social’ because ‘it is a conflict between large scale socio-economic or socio-political groupings’ (p. 230).
